Leigh's Home Run for Charity
04 Jun 2010
St George’s Business Park Manager Leigh Kedwell crossed the finish line at Dunkirk with honours having completed a gruelling 377 mile charity cycle marathon across Northern France. Together with hundreds of other charity riders he had set out from Portsmouth on 24 May for the annual Help for Heroes charity challenge.
After the channel crossing, the riders left the coast at Le Havre and then moved north through Amiens and Ypres, crossing many World War 1 battlefields.
They then finished at Dunkirk, with the ride’s end timed to coincide with the anniversary commemorations of the World War 2 evacuation.
Leigh said: “It was a tremendous experience and the spirit among the riders was great. All along the way we received great support and encouragement.
“We were pleased that wounded service participants could join us, riding as part of their rehabilitation programme. Their presence really put the ride into focus and they showed by example what can be achieved with real determination.”
Former gunner Leigh has been training and fund raising for several months supported by his family and friends. He hopes to be able to announce the final amount he has raised for Help for Heroes by the end of June.
Help for Heroes aims to provide long-term solutions to the problems faced by those with long-term injuries. The charity supplements and enhances available facilities so that those in rehabilitation get the very best care and treatment. Servicemen and women need long-term support to recover from their injuries and to rebuild their careers.
