The business rates system is changing from 1st April 2017, as we reported in our earlier blog   in October.  We now have the draft list of rateable values; here’s what they mean for CapitalSpace customers, and the support that we are providing to make sure our customers secure fair rates.

The valuation office has recently published the draft list of rateable values that will be effective from April 2017. The actual sum payable by ratepayers will not be known until local authorities announce the rate in the £ that will be charged, and this will not be for some time yet.

Generally, the rateable values in CapitalSpace centres have risen only slightly, although there are some exceptions.  At Loughton, there are several units that have a reduced assessment.  Unfortunately, at Churchill Square in Kings Hill, the increases are very significant – sometimes as much as 300%.  We believe that this has been caused by a mistake and are taking urgent steps to challenge these assessments.

CapitalSpace employs a very reputable firm of surveyors that specialises in the practice and law associated with business rates, Matthews and Goodman.  The company has agreed to look at every one of the assessments for our properties and will challenge those that look to be overvalued.  If any customer has a query regarding rates, they should contact Reception.

On no account should customers accept invitations from itinerant rates surveyors touting for business, as these people can confuse the situation – to the detriment of everyone at CapitalSpace.
