Our marketing expert’s smashing challenges

As soon as we heard about 50 Challenges, a movement set up by our marketing expert Siobhan Stirling of Sharp Minds Communications to encourage people aged 50+ to achieve their dreams, we felt we had to get involved.  We’re delighted to be able to tell you that she stormed through her first challenge with a personal best – and is well on track (with our help) with her second.

What is 50 Challenges?  

50 Challenges aims to inspire, support and celebrate those aged 50 plus redefine mid-life as they regain time for themselves by doing more, achieving more and being more than they ever thought possible.  Motivated by the fact that previous role models for what it means to be 50 plus no longer fit, the aim is for each person’s 50 Challenges to be unique to their personal dreams – it could be anything from baking a cake a month to competing in a triathlon. 

CapitalSpace were keen to endorse 50 Challenges as pursuing and achieving dreams is what we help business owners and entrepreneurs to do.  The community side of 50 Challenges also aligns very well with our core beliefs, as we believe in supporting our customers and suppliers and our local communities, and in bringing them together as a community to support one another. 

All for a good cause
 

Siobhan launched 50 Challenges with her first challenge, running the New York Marathon, at the same time starting her second challenge: to raise £50,000 for the MS Society during her fifties.  To get off to a good start with her fundraising goal, she set herself the target of raising £5,000 in sponsorship for the marathon. 

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most widespread disabling neurological condition of young adults around the world.  We’re delighted to say that, with an injection of sponsorship from CapitalSpace Siobhan surpassed her £5,000 ambition – and romped home in New York with a personal best of 3:53:24. 

An amazing start  

“New York was a really tough marathon, so to have achieved a personal best and to smash my first fundraising goal towards my £50,000 target was an incredible feeling, and I am so grateful to CapitalSpace for making such a generous donation to this fantastic cause,” Siobhan said.  “It was the perfect launch for 50 Challenges.” 

50 Challenges has certainly struck a chord: you may well have seen pictures of an ecstatic Siobhan at the end of the New York marathon, proudly displaying her medal and her ‘50’ balloons’ in some of our local papers: “The initial exposure has been a real boon.  We are getting more people engaging with us on social media and joining our community, which is what it’s all about.” 

What’s next
 

Siobhan is now looking to spread the word further, and has a growing number of speaker events lined up to explain the concept of 50 Challenges and how people can join: “It’s hard work trying to create this movement on top of running a marketing agency, but I have a team behind me who are just as enthusiastic about the concept and the value it can deliver to people aged 50+ and we are determined to make this happen.” 

On top of all this, Siobhan is also working on her next personal challenges: “My third challenge is to walk 10,000 steps a day for a year, which is proving hard as I am stuck on the office for much of the time, so I am having to rethink my lifestyle – which is why I set myself this challenge.  I am also reading a book a month and posting a review of it on our blog to keep myself accountable.”
