Being environmentally friendly is an important part of the business accommodation we provide.  The addition of our latest green scheme, Pod Points, is yet another example of how we help the environment – and how we help our clients fulfil their Corporate Social Responsibility.

The future of driving

It’s impossible to have missed that the world is moving closer and closer to abolishing diesel and petrol and opting for more environmental options, such as electric vehicles. With the increased demand for EVs there needs to be the option to charge them. That’s where Pod Point comes in; they have become the UK’s leading provider of electric vehicle charging since they started in 2009 and have a network of over 1,500 public charging stations.

Our plan

At the moment, there are four Pod Points at our Churchill Square Business Centre in Kings Hill, which were designed into the new central building on the site, Building 80. We already produce a lot of our own electricity at Churchill Square; we have five solar panel arrays, which together produce 150,000kw hours per year and so it makes perfect sense for us to find ways of using the electricity we generate on site.  Installing the Pod Points not only enables us to support our customers who are investing in environmentally-friendly cars, it also enables us to make good use of the power we are creating through our solar panels.

Although we only currently have Pod Points at Kings Hill, we are aiming to roll them out at our other centres in the future, to enable customers at all nine of our business accommodation centres to make green decisions about how they get to and from work.

How they work

Payment is automated via apps, in a similar way to the technology that takes payment for the Dartford Crossing. You simply sign up to an app, provide your bank details and in return the app identifies nearby charging points. When you arrive at one, you connect your phone wirelessly to the charging point so it can identify your vehicle and then upload electricity to your car. Simple and very effective.

Peter Boam, founder of CapitalSpace, said: "We are always committed to minimising our impact on the environment and that of our customers, so we consider this in all our business decisions. Designing charging points for electric vehicles into the facilities of our new building made business and environmental sense, as they enable us to support our customers, suppliers and visitors – as well as the local community – with their evolving transport needs."

It’s great to see the increase in customers who are taking advantage of the Pod Points and we believe it really adds value to our business accommodation.
