If you’re an entrepreneur, you probably spent a long time thinking about whether to quit the day job and working out if you could make your great business idea a success.  So you’ll probably be intrigued to read about how family business Farmwood came about.  Based at St George’s Business Park in Sittingbourne, it wasn’t the founder’s intention to start his own company – but that hasn’t stopped them building a regional reputation.

An accidental family affair

Farmwood, which provides ventilation systems, has a client base that extends across the South – but the company came about almost by accident.  Managing Director Nathan Wood – who is also the son of the founder, Dave Wood – explains: ‘My father is now the CEO of the company, but it didn’t begin like that. He started off managing a contract for a ventilation company called Nuaire Ltd.  They were so impressed with his management skills, they offered the renewal of the contract directly to him and Farmwood was born. Farmwood is made up of my mother’s maiden name, Farmer, and my father’s surname, Wood.

‘Our grass roots are mechanical and electrical engineering, specialising in ventilation systems for everyone from major building companies, housing associations and councils through to domestic clients.  We have a wealth of knowledge and experience that has allowed us to grow to a team of 28 since we started 16 years ago and have many contracts all over the south of the UK. Our work in ventilation systems has driven new interest with air quality, monitoring systems and IOT (internet of things) automated control.’

Finding the right space

In 2005, Farmwood were looking for a place to set up base and St George’s Business Park was the right fit: ‘The offices were perfect for a small business plus there was adequate parking with safe and secure grounds. A bonus was the separate meeting facility to offer our visitors a personal and professional space. The staff were, and continue to be, very friendly and helpful. The grounds are kept clean and tidy.

‘Since moving to St George’s Business Park we have upgraded from one of the smallest units to two of the biggest – one for our offices and the other as a warehouse facility. Each move has been assisted by the staff at St George’s Business Park seamlessly. Our telephone lines were always moved on time without issue.

‘At the end of 2017 we moved in to a temporary office (also on site) and fully refurbished our offices and warehouse. The staff have been amazed by what we have achieved with the refurbishment, putting in a new mezzanine floor for further spare office space and even a meeting room. Additionally, we have installed the latest air-quality systems, ventilation and air conditioning, ensuring the very best air quality for all our employees and overall a fantastic place to work.’

A moral attitude

Farmwood’s excellent service has enabled them to develop a profitable business and has given them the ability to expand to new areas whilst recruiting new employees. However, profit isn’t their only goal for the company: ‘Our standards are very high, and profit is obviously important, but our drive to promote wellbeing and good air quality gives us a great sense of karma too.’

Combining high work standards and an excellent working environment is a formula that is helping to fuel Farmwood’s success.
