It can be difficult to get your business up and running, and even once you’re past the initial stage, it requires time and effort to keep the cogs turning smoothly. We’ve spoken to some of our Capital Space small business customers to get an insight into their top tips for getting your company beyond surviving, to thriving.

Running a business requires hard work and determination – with possibly a dash of blood, sweat and tears. Across our nine business accommodation and enterprise centres we have hundreds of successful businesses, so we’ve pulled together some of their thoughts to give you inspiration to keep you on track to success.

Love what you do

"You need to be passionate. You genuinely need to love what you do. At difficult times, it’s the passion that pulls you through.”

Kristina Wakem, MDT Cosmetics Founder. Churchill Square Business Centre, Kings Hill.

Work hard and be different

"Do something unique – bring something new to the table.  Don’t rely on other people to do your work for you. Just because you love something doesn’t mean you can make a living out of it.”

Sarah Condry, director, Woven Wings. Churchill Square Business Centre, Kings Hill.

Play to your strengths

"I don't try to do everything myself and it's made a massive difference. I have learned what I am good at and stick to that; what I am not good at, I pay other people to do, such as accounting and social media."

Dr Miguel Gutierrez Martinez, clinic director and chiropractor, MGM Clinics. Greenway Business Centre, Harlow.

Know your stuff

“Do your research and get a business qualification first. You need to understand how a business runs."

Cristina Mitchell, director, Woven Wings. Churchill Square Business Centre, Kings Hill.

Cashflow is king

"You must have your finance sorted as cashflow is king. Depending on your business, make sure you have the right accounts package in place. I went with Xero and I'm really pleased with it."

John Ryan, managing director, JMR Recruitment. Waterhouse Business Centre, Chelmsford.

Learn from your mistakes

“Don’t be afraid to fail, as long as you can learn why or what caused you to fail. Don’t put things off to tomorrow if it can be done today. Change is the only constant, so don’t worry about it."

Gary Keeley, managing director, LR Connections. Waterhouse Business Centre, Chelmsford.

Each of our business and enterprise centres houses thriving business communities, with a range of expertise and skill sets.  If you hit a problem, or just need a bit of motivation, one of your neighbours can probably help you.  So start up a conversation when you make a coffee in the kitchen – before long you will have a whole network of trusted business associates who can help you when the going gets tough.  There’s always someone a couple of steps ahead of you – and most of them are happy to share their experiences to help a fellow business owner.
