Our Kings Hill Business Centre client, Wilkinson Construction Consultants, recently got involved in a secret plan to gift Theo Paphitis of Dragons’ Den a special surprise on his 60th birthday. Finding the perfect present for the multimillionaire businessman and Small Business Sunday founder was going to be a challenge for the #SBS group – after all, what do you get the man who’s got everything?

What is #SBS?

Small Business Sunday, shortened to the hashtag #SBS on Twitter, was created by Theo Paphitis in October 2010. Theo – best known for appearing on Dragons' Den – is Chairman of Ryman Stationery and several other businesses.

Each week, Theo looks at those small businesses that have tweeted him @TheoPaphitis including the all-important hashtag #SBS. He chooses the six he believes have best described their businesses, which he then retweets. As he has over 450,000 followers, this provides a massive boost to those businesses. At the end of July 2016 (31/07/16) Wilkinson Construction Consultants, based at Churchill Square Business Centre, was fortunate enough to be selected under the SBS banner, thanks to its tweet “we are a small family business offering a no-bureaucracy way to get building regulation approval”. Says Managing Director, Geoff Wilkinson, “Like so many small businesses over the years that are part of SBS, we have really benefitted from the exposure Theo gave us via his Twitter feed. That’s why we wanted to mark his sixtieth birthday as an SBS group - but what do you get a multimillionaire?”

Collaborating with small businesses

Teaming up with over 160 UK-based small businesses that have benefited from SBS over the years, Wilkinson Construction Consultants decided to support the #ThankYouNHS campaign as an appropriate way of celebrating Theo’s birthday. Founded by fellow #SBS winner, Nigel Richardson of Secret Hamper, #ThankYouNHS saw the group sponsor 70 bespoke sharing hampers for the staff at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), a hospital that Theo has supported over the last decade.

Being a part of #SBS

Says Geoff Wilkinson, “Both #SBS and #ThankYouNHS are passionate about giving back and spreading the feel-good factor, as well as raising recognition and exposure, which is why they seemed to complement each other very well. “

“The building sector has suffered badly from recession in the past, and often has to deal with negative publicity. Having #SBS as a platform, though, has helped generate exposure of our business at Wilkinson’s, and shown people the quality of our work and our commitment to offering great service. Since getting the #SBS recognition in 2016 we’ve seen year on year growth and today we’re thriving.  Theo Paphitis’s #SBS endorsement of us has certainly helped us achieve our current success.”

Social media can make or break a business’s reputation and it’s great to see it being used to help great smaller companies get the recognition they deserve.
