Business success is often measured by growth – but big isn’t always best. For our Milton Keynes Business Centre customer, WedoApps, keeping the team small enough to be agile and proactive is a key part of their strategy, alongside expert staff buzzing with creative, innovative ideas. It’s a formula that is helping them to build a successful business.

Seizing business opportunities

WedoApps sprang from my background in systems coding,” explains MD Chris Collinge, who has been based at our Milton Keynes centre for the past year. “I was working under contract for a variety of firms, and from time to time, they’d ask me to come up with solutions. When the iPhone first hit the market in 2007,  it was clear there was a need for affordable app solutions – clients were coming up with ideas and needed apps to accommodate them.”

Joining forces with a network of other systems professionals, Chris began working with small businesses, launching Wedoapps in 2009. “For the care home group, Abbeyfield, for instance, we came up with Boardpapers – an app that would do away with the need for loads of paperwork every time its executives had a meeting. We also worked with a group of childcare nurseries to create an app that overcame a key problem for the staff, who couldn’t take calls during nursery hours; the app enabled messages to be sent direct to their phones, without any need for them to log in to any outside systems.”

Steady business growth

One of the secrets of WedoApp’s success is the fact that the business has taken its time to grow. “It took us around five years to build a client base, then another four before we took on new people. Our product developer Simon joined us last year, and we also have a couple of developers and a designer working with us. We’re agile to reflect the times we live in – technology is always moving forward and so are we! Having worked in this sector for years – Simon has 30 years’ experience – we get to know who we can work with and  who to trust; you don’t want to risk your brand by taking on any additional freelancers or contract staff who you don’t know to be totally reliable.”

Word-of-mouth referrals fuelling business growth

WedoApp’s reputation has grown largely through word-of-mouth: “If someone asks us to quote, or presents us with a problem that they want us to solve via an app, we always arrange to meet them face-to-face. It’s so easy to think we can do everything via technology, but nothing beats human contact – it’s certainly worked for us in generating business.”

And the team is always on the look-out for new opportunities: “We’re working on a really exciting app at the moment  that charities can use at silent auctions. CharityBid allows outside bidders to take part in any auction in real time and includes  a ‘Leader Board’, which is great for generating competitive interest. If it’s a corporate charity auction, for instance, companies can see if their rivals are currently in top-bid position and can then outbid them if they want to. It’s fun for those taking part and means more money for good causes.”

Business accommodation with a matching ethos

Chris and his team have found the Milton Keynes Business Centre an ideal home – not just because of the convenience of its location but because the Capital Space team seems every bit as engaged and energetic as WedoApps’ own: “I’ve known the centre manager Matt for a number of years and he’s a great guy, full of energy. The team here never stands still; for instance, in the summer, they created a new break-out area for meetings. Just like us, they are always looking for ways to improve.”

Connecting and communicating with clients, staying nimble on your feet and ensuring that you work with experts who are as passionate as you are about their respective sectors are all ways in which you can help ensure your business thrives.
