A long-time customer at Colchester Business and Seedbed Centre , Joe Solomons is co-owner of Windows Etc , a supplier of high-quality doors and windows across Essex and the South East. As the business turns 17 this year, Joe looks back on how the window specialists have grown from a small office space to their fantastic new flagship showroom, which measures an impressive 7,500sq ft!

Years of experience

Joe has a wealth of experience having worked in the glazing industry for over 30 years with many of his team sharing a similar background. Windows Etc was set up in 2006 and began life in a smaller industrial unit at the same Colchester site.

“When we set up in 2006, we looked at small industrial units to rent at Capital Space which were perfect for a start-up business. By 2016 we had outgrown the space and bought a bigger unit."

A clear, focused business model

Windows Etc focus their business on trade rather than retail customers and set out to become the go-to provider in the area. To achieve that, Joe and his team had a clear plan of action.

“We needed to provide a space where builders, architects, window fitters and tradespeople could send their customers to see our products in a space where they would feel comfortable making important decisions about potentially expensive projects.”

Why they chose a Capital Space business centre

Joe was always keen to have a space that had a wow factor for customers to visit and his showroom at our Colchester site certainly has that! Initially the flexible license was the key factor for Joe but it’s the team and the centre’s location that have held long term benefits for the business.

"The team here are great. They are super helpful in terms of allowing us to expand when we needed to and John, the site manager, is always willing to help. The building is in great condition and is very tidy compared to other industrial sites.”

“Our spot is a beautiful setting to work from which makes it a lot more enjoyable. It’s important to have a nice space as clients come to our show rooms here."

What are the future plans for Windows Etc

Having made significant strides within the industry, Joe spoke of the business’ future plans and goals. Keeping in touch with current trends, Windows Etc looks to be going greener and is mindful of the cost-of-living crisis.

“We are also looking to work with more energy efficient products. We would love to support our customers and their customers’ carbon initiatives. So, keep an eye out for a range of new energy efficient windows and doors. We’re also very conscious of the cost-of-living crisis so we are looking to develop more cost-efficient products as well."

We’re always proud of customers that grow and expand within our centres and Windows Etc are a shining example of that. We wish them the very best this year and beyond!
