Like most businesses, Capital Space are always looking for ways to reduce our carbon emissions and improve our eco initiatives. We have implemented many changes across our business centres that will have a significant impact for the future. Our latest plan, though simple, has proven to deliver a huge saving in carbon emissions.

Lighting reduction saves tonnes

Towards the end of 2022 we decided to reduce our lighting in our business centre car parks- an area that is unused at certain times. As a result, we have saved 11.5kw per hour across eight centres. This comes to around 50,000kwh of electricity each year, which equates to 11½ tonnes of CO2 saved across the group.

Putting the numbers into context

To put the figures into perspective using a greenhouse gas calculator, the total amount Capital Space business centres are saving is equivalent to:

  • 3 tons of waste being recycled rather than put into landfill
  • 1534 bags of waste recycled rather than put into landfill
  • 583 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.

It is also the same as C02 emissions from:

  • 9 homes’ electricity usage in one year
  • 82 barrels of oil consumed
  • 1,447 propane cylinders used for home BBQs
  • 3 million smartphones being charged.

How your business can reduce their carbon emissions

Carbon footprint assessment

This involves identifying the sources of greenhouse gas emissions within your operations and supply chain- there are many companies that provide this service. The assessment can help businesses understand where they can make the most impact in reducing emissions.

Improving energy efficiency

Companies can reduce their carbon emissions by improving the energy efficiency of their operations. Using more efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems, and improving insulation will all contribute to a greener work environment

Switching to renewable energy

To go a step further, one of the most effective ways to reduce carbon emissions is to switch to renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar power , for electricity and heating.

Responsible partnerships

It can be difficult to manage the amount of carbon used by your partners, suppliers and other third-party associates. However, performing due diligence and asking for carbon information before joining forces is becoming common place .

Our Eco Champions hold regular meetings to ensure that our centres are as environmentally sustainable as possible and to provide facilities for customers to participate in our carbon-reduction efforts. If you’re looking for office space that gives back to the local community, please  get in touch  .
