Lord Sainsbury has opened the Capital Business Centre in Croydon. More than 100 civic and business representatives attended the launch and heard Lord Sainsbury praise the entrepreneurial spirit of the Borough.

Lord Sainsbury emphasised the important role that small and medium-sized businesses would play in future growth and development.

He said: “Our small and medium-sized businesses have shown time and time again that they can provide new ideas and develop new opportunities. They have taken full advantage of a strong and stable economy where enterprise and innovation can flourish and have provided real business leadership.

“We have to ensure that the growth businesses of the future continue to have all the support they need. Business Links

can provide help with business planning and development and our Learning & Skills Councils will support workforce development by encouraging lifelong learning in the knowledge economy.

“Expanding businesses also need the right base from which to grow and develop. I am therefore immensely encouraged to see the launch of the Capital Business Centre. I am sure the Centre will prove to be a successful business hub, where businesses can work together and provide a dynamic focus for growth in Croydon.”

The £12m Capital Business Centre provides space for more than 80 businesses and is located on a self-contained 6-acre site just off Carlton Road. A wide range of office and workshop space is available, with full office support services supervised by an on-site Centre Manager.

The Centre is part of a network of business centres being developed by Capital Enterprise Centres. Seven centres have been created across the South and East of England and more are planned.

Capital Enterprise Centres Managing Director Peter Boam said the company was very pleased to be able to welcome Lord Sainsbury to the Centre.

He said: “We were delighted to be able to show Lord Sainsbury how successful the development of the Capital Business Centre has been. Croydon Council and Croydon Marketing and Development have been very supportive and our first business tenants are already moving in.”
