How we’re improving our communication styles

Posted by Sharp Minds on 27th August 2026, 8:49am

When we approach the topic of improving team effectiveness, many tend to look at the bigger picture. However, our Centre Managers recently learned how to zoom in on themselves during an insightful communications session with Wow Coaching’s Will Grover. Here’s how it went…

Introducing a four-colour communications model

Will Grover of WOW Coaching & Training

Will Grover, founder of WOW Coaching & Training, helped us understand that the way we communicate, make decisions and behave can be understood through a simple four-colour system. We were asked to identify adjectives which described our personality traits:

  1. Red – direct, fast-paced, results-focused
  2. Yellow – sociable, creative, people-focused, enthusiastic
  3. Green – calm, patient, supportive, values-led
  4. Blue – analytical, detail-oriented, structured.

For a modern business centre network, Will taught us that understanding our unique preferences would enable us to connect better with our colleagues, suppliers and customers whilst also enabling us to adapt our styles to everyone we communicate with.

What did we do during our session?

Centre managers from every single Capital Space location, from  Churchill Square Business Centre in Kings Hill to Capital Business Centre in Croydon  gathered together for this intensive, interactive training day.

Our centre managers learned exactly what their behavioural makeup means in general terms and, most importantly, saw how they “fit in” to the broader team while noticing what kinds of strengths lie elsewhere. Will introduced a versatile communication model, showcasing practical ways to make the most of your own inherent preferences and to recognise and adjust to others who may differ from you in approach. This is ideal for forming and strengthening a collaborative team approach across different regional hubs.

Will said: “Learning more about yourself and appreciating the similarities and differences in others is the key to achieving great things for yourself and even greater things working together as a team. That’s why I was delighted to help the Capital Space team take a deep dive into personality styles, behavioural preferences and how to adapt your communication depending on who you’re speaking to.’

However, he was impressed by the level of teamwork the group held already, adding:

“It was obvious that the team had a deep respect for each other already. Helping them to add some extra awareness to those relationships was an absolute pleasure and privilege.”

Key takeaways from the session

Investing in professional development directly correlates with enhanced operational output. Research shows that soft skills such as communication, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal collaboration should remain a focus for leadership development because they drive measurable performance gains in productivity, retention and even profits. The training provided our centre managers with practical, real-world tools designed to optimise daily operations. The core lessons focused on four distinct areas:

  • Self-awareness: Attendees gained clear insights into their own natural behavioural and communications style, strengths, and potential blind spots, helping them understand how they come across to others and why they work the way they do.
  • Understanding differences: The cohort learned to recognise and value the four distinct behaviour styles in their team, significantly reducing frustration and misunderstandings when working alongside people who approach tasks differently.
  • Improved communication & relationships: The managers discovered practical ways to adapt their style to connect better with colleagues, give and receive feedback more effectively, and build stronger collaboration across virtual boundaries.
  • Actionable application: Everyone left with simple, highly adaptable strategies to flex their approach in meetings, day-to-day leadership, client relations, or conflict situations—turning personal insight into real-world performance gains.

These kinds of insights will help identify areas where individuals may choose to dial-up or dial-down certain characteristics, bringing about a deeper understanding, acceptance, and appreciation of one another. As Will noted, this common behavioural framework serves as a lasting asset for building a unified workplace culture.

Will Grover said: “Treat others as THEY would like to be treated. That should be the goal, and that takes effort on our part. But it is so worth it! Harmony in the team, connection with your customers and clients and a feeling that anything is possible when we move together as one.”
