The Evolution and Growth of Sigma Networks Ltd

Gary Stockman and Ian McCole, founders of Sigma Networks Ltd, take time out of their busy schedule to share the story of the birth and growth of Sigma Networks and impart their wisdom for any budding entrepreneur.

What do you do for a living? How did you get started in your industry or field? How long have you been based at this address?

Principally we are NICEIC approved electrical contractors specialising in telecoms, CCTV and access control.  We both started our careers in telecoms with BT and after talking for a number of years about starting our own business, the opportunity eventually arose when in 1997 we were offered redundancy.  Initially concentrating on telecoms, the business evolved to include electrical and security systems due to customer demand.  We are currently looking to expand into fire alarm systems giving our customers a one-stop-shop solution.  We have been based at Greenway Business Centre since June 2004 just 2 months after the centre opened.

How did you come to choose this address as your perfect space or selected business base to grow from?

In early 2004 we started looking for suitable premises where we could grow our business for years to come.  While driving around Harlow we came across a new centre still under construction at that time.  By early summer when the centre was complete we quickly realised that Greenway would be ideal for us, conveniently located, a modern purpose built space in a pleasant secure environment on an easy-in easy-out licence with professional helpful staff.

What do you recall as your most defined business breakthrough – a moment you knew you had a first big break?

12 years ago we won a contract with Talk Talk, building a data centre in London.   We knew this contract would increase our turnover considerably and raise our profile, opening the doors to other blue chip companies.  We were not disappointed and over the years we have worked for some big names such as Carphone Warehouse, BT, Cable and Wireless, Balfour Beatty, Vinci Facilities, ITV and even worked on a project for Channel 4’s Big Brother.

Has anyone ever acted as your role model or mentor? And how did knowing or even watching them help you?

In the early years we had watched a friend of ours build a successful business in the same industry and this showed us that it could be done. However, we don’t really have a role model as such, we were always driven by the desire to run our own business and of course increase our earning potential.  This drive has enabled us to grow a successful business that now employs 10 permanent members of staff, as well as a number of regular sub-contractors.

What advice would you give to a young person starting out today?

Place high emphasis on sales and marketing and developing relationships with both new and existing clients. Always place emphasis on the quality of the work or service you provide. Conduct yourself with honesty and integrity and you will reap the benefits.  Above all be prepared to work hard, being your own boss is a fallacy… your customers are your boss!
